Changing your debit card limit

Changing your debit card limit

Online in a few steps

There may be times when you want to make a major purchase or transfer a larger sum. In that case, you can temporarily change your daily limit in the ABN AMRO app. It will take four hours for your new limit to take effect, because it is more secure that way. Set an end date so that your limit will automatically be reset to your previous, lower limit.

  • If you want to change the daily amount you can withdraw from an ATM or pay in a shop, change your card limit
  • Good to know: you pay charges when you withdraw rolls with coins. If you withdraw paper money, this is free up to € 17,500. See the rates.
  • If you want to change how much you can transfer in the ABN AMRO app without using the e.dentifier (this includes iDEAL payments), change your daily limit .

Frequently asked questions

The standard withdrawal limit is €500. You can change the card limit yourself, but do be aware that you can’t choose a card limit that’s higher than your account balance. For example, if your balance is €750, the highest limit you can set for your card is €750.

You can transfer up to €50,000 a day with the app without having to use the e.dentifier. If you want to transfer larger amounts, you can do so on Internet Banking and use your e.dentifier to confirm.

The following limits apply on Internet Banking:

  • a maximum of €250,000 per transfer
  • a maximum total amount of €50,000 in iDEAL payments in one day
Unfortunately, it’s not possible to withdraw more than the maximum card limit of €50,000 per day.
Normally, you can make consecutive contactless payments up to €50. The maximum amount has been temporarily increased to €100. It’s not possible to change the amount up to which you can make contactless payments with your debit card. This is to prevent fraud and misuse if your card is stolen, for example.

A new card limit will take effect right away.

If you have lowered your daily limit in the app to under €2,500, your new limit will take effect immediately. If you have raised your daily limit in the app, it will take four hours for your higher limit to take effect. This is to protect you from scammers.

Withdrawing cash costs money in some cases. If you withdraw more than €17,500 per year in cash, a fee of €5 per transaction plus 0.5% of the amount withdrawn is charged. See this page for more information about costs.
All ABN AMRO ATMs have been replaced by Geldmaat ATMs. The amounts you can withdraw are the same everywhere. You can set a separate card limit for cash withdrawals (maximum €10,000 per day).
We want to be sure that you are who you say you are when you open an account. This helps us to prevent fraud, for example abuse of your current account. For this reason, one of the things we need from you is an extract from the Municipal Personal Records Database (BRP). You receive this extract free of charge at your first registration in the municipality where you live. You can open the account even without the extract, but some features of your current account will not be available yet, for example deposits and cash withdrawals.
