Financing your car

Financing your car

What are your options?

How can I finance a car as an expat in the Netherlands?

It’s not every day that you buy a car, so it’s a good idea to look into a few things before making a purchase. Buying a car in the Netherlands as an expat can be quite complex. The car must be registered in your name and you must be able to finance the car. Find out more about the available options.

The pros and cons of using your savings, taking out a loan and leasing

Savings

  • The car immediately belongs to you after purchase.
  • You pay no interest.
  • You retain the residual value.
  • If you don’t yet have enough money saved, you may have to wait longer before buying the car.
  • Once you have bought the car, you may not have enough savings for other (unforeseen) purchases.
  • You pay for maintenance, repairs, tax and insurance yourself.

Loan

  • The car immediately belongs to you after purchase.
  • You pay a fixed amount every month and determine the loan term yourself.
  • You can make additional repayments without extra costs.
  • You can also finance part of the purchase price with a loan.
  • You pay interest on top of the amount you have borrowed.
  • You may not be able to apply for a loan.
  • You pay for maintenance, repairs, tax and insurance yourself.
  • If you sell the car or it is written off before you have repaid the loan, you must still repay it.

Private lease

  • You pay a fixed amount every month.
  • The monthly payment includes maintenance, tax and insurance.
  • You do not need to pay a lump sum.
  • The maximum age is often higher than with a loan.
  • You lease the car; it is not your property.
  • You pay extra if you drive more than the agreed number of kilometres.
  • Terminating the contract is often expensive.
  • Often only economical from 10,000km annually.
