Settling in the Netherlands
What do you need to arrange?
Step 1 - Register yourself
Registering with the local council is one of the first things you need to do once you arrive in the Netherlands. You must register within five days of moving to the Netherlands, along with your partner and children (if applicable). You will be given a BSN (Dutch personal ID number) when you register. You need this number for all the other matters that need to be arranged, such as opening a bank account.
Don't have a BSN yet? Then you can still open an account. However, you must provide us with your BSN within 90 days after opening your account.
Step 2 - Open a bank account
You can open a Dutch account as soon as you have moved to the Netherlands. There is no need to visit a branch – all you need is your mobile. Simply download the ABN AMRO app and follow the instructions. You will be able to check your account balance in the app within just a few hours. In the Netherlands, it's good to know the most popular payments methods used here.
Step 3 - Check your insurances
Health insurance is compulsory in the Netherlands. Liability insurance is not compulsory for private individuals, but it is a good idea. ABN AMRO offers a wide range of insurances. Whether you have bought a new home, are planning to move house or are going on holiday, there is a policy to suit you. Take a look at all our insurance policies. You can easily apply for them online.
Step 4 - Find a home
You can look for a home on housing websites, through an estate agent or on social media. You may be able to find a home through your family, your employer or a relocator. Most expats take out a mortgage when buying a home.
Step 5 - Get the full checklist
Do you want be sure not to forget anything while settling in? Make a personal checklist. We offer you a checklist you can use to record your progress.
