Information for debtors

There are several aspects you need to be aware of if money is collected from your account by direct debit.

Cross Border

Be aware that money can be collected from your account from any SEPA country if you have given a company a signed mandate.

Mandates

With a direct debit you authorise a company or institution to debit one-off or recurrent amounts from your account. You must give your permission first by issuing a mandate. The company or institution will send you a mandate form for this purpose. You must complete, sign and return the mandate to the company or institution. Alternatively, the company or institution will request you to issue an e-Mandate for Direct Debit.

An e-Mandate is a safe way of giving your authorisation online. Simply go to the website of the company or institution and select the payment method 'Incassomachtigen via uw bank' (Direct Debit Mandate via your bank) and select ABN AMRO. This will take you to the ABN AMRO Internet Banking environment. Follow the instructions and send the e-Mandate using your e.dentifier2.

If you want to change or cancel a direct debit mandate, you must also inform the company or institution.

Prenotification

A creditor must give you 14 days' notice of the amount and the collection date before executing a direct debit, unless you have agreed another period. You will normally receive this advance notice with the invoice, but also you may be notified by e-mail or text message. If advance payments are collected from your account by direct debit, for example for your energy bill, the creditor needs to notify you about the amounts and all collection dates within the next year.

Reversal of a direct debit

The creditor can correct SEPA Direct Debits, for example, if there is a mistake. This is called a reversal. A direct debit may be reversed up to five working days after it is executed. You will see this as two separate entries - debit and credit - on your account statement. There may be a one or more days difference between the dates of the entries, but the interest date of the two entries will be the same day so you do not lose any interest.

Refusing a direct debit

Internet Banking and Access Online list SEPA Direct Debits that still have to be executed. In order for the direct debits to be executed, please make sure that you have put sufficient funds in your account. Or you can decide to refuse a direct debit. You can refuse a SEPA Core Direct Debit up to one day before the execution. A SEPA Direct Debit B2B can even be refused until the collection day. You can only refuse the full amount of a SEPA Direct Debit.

Please note: if you have entered into an obligation to pay the company, you can refuse the direct debit, but your obligation to pay remains the same as before.

Refund of a direct debit

You can obtain a refund of a SEPA Direct Debit Core. This can be done for all recurrent and one-off mandates.

Please note: if you have entered into an obligation to pay the company, you can have the direct debit refunded, but your obligation to pay remains the same as before.

No debit and credit notification in the case of insufficient funds

If there are insufficient funds in your account on the day of collection, the amount is not debited. The direct debit is either immediately rejected or assigned 'in behandeling' (in progress) status. You can see the status in Internet Banking and Access Online. If the direct debit is 'in behandeling' (in progress), we will debit the amount if there are sufficient funds in your account within no more than 4 business days (SEPA Direct Debit Core) or 1 business day (SEPA Direct Debit B2B) after the original scheduled collection date. If you do not have Internet Banking or Access Online, you will receive a letter if the direct debit is rejected.

Direct Debit Settings

You can set up various direct debit settings for your payment account. The default setting is: 'Allow direct debits for your account. However you can limit or refuse specific direct debits'. This setting is applicable to all direct debits of the SEPA Direct Debit Core type. You can entirely block direct debits from a certain creditor and/or for a certain mandate. Or you can set limits for direct debits such as a maximum amount per direct debit or a maximum number of direct debits per calendar year. You can only set these limits if ABN AMRO has previously received a direct debit instruction from this creditor.

You can also change the default direct debit setting for your account to: 'Refuse direct debits for your account. However, you can allow or limit specific direct debits.'. In this case you set up an approval list, explicitly indicating which direct debits can be debited from your account. You can also set limits for these direct debits, such as a maximum amount per direct debit or a maximum number of direct debits per calendar year. This is only possible if ABN AMRO has previously received a direct debit instruction from this creditor. Please note: with this default setting, we advise you to carefully check rejected direct debits. If you forget to allow a direct debit, it may be unintentionally rejected.

You can adjust your direct debit settings via Internet Banking, under the heading 'Beheer' (Manage). Alternatively, you can contact us about this.

Please note: these direct debit settings are not applicable to SEPA B2B Direct Debits. With a SEPA B2B Direct Debit, you must always register the details of the mandate. If you no longer wish to allow a SEPA B2B Direct Debit to be debited from your account, you must cancel the mandate registration for this SEPA B2B Direct Debit.
